Required for the Science and Technology Facilities Council, Daresbury Laboratory in the Accelerator Science and Technology Centre (ASTeC). ASTeC’s role is to carry out feasibility and design studies in new accelerator projects and to undertake accelerator Research and Development. This vacancy is within the Radio Frequency (RF) and Cryogenics group which designs, builds, develops and supports advanced RF systems for high-energy particle accelerators.
At present the RF and Cryogenic Group is contributing to a number of accelerator based projects, which include; installation and commissioning of RF systems needed for the Versatile Electron Linear Accelerator and Compact Linear Advanced Research Accelerator (CLARA) facilities currently being developed at Daresbury Laboratory also the European Spallation Source (ESS).
About the role
You will be responsible for the development of digital based measurement and control systems, including closed loop control, design of digital filter systems, digital signal processing, performing timing and synchronization measurements between RF signals as well as developing solutions to target these areas of work. Typically these digital measurement and control systems operate in low power (0dBm and an IF of 50MHz) however the control outputs can be driving RF power amplifiers in the kW and MW power class.
These systems are employed on accelerator projects, such as VELA and CLARA and will feature constant development. You will also be expected to work closely with the technology design team, external contractors and external facility users to ensure project timescales are met. As well as these technical duties the candidate will also be responsible for health and safety within this area of work.
You will be a highly motivated engineer or scientist and be qualified to degree level or equivalent in a relevant science or engineering subject.
You must have experience with digital signal processing technologies and ideally have an interest in RF aspects of accelerators.
You must have experience of working within a small team involved in the design, manufacturing, testing and commissioning of digital based projects and the necessary project management expertise to deliver medium to large scale projects.
The role will involve occasional travel within the UK and abroad so you must be prepared to travel and must also have a full UK driving license.
