About

Donald Trump has sharply questioned Britain’s decision to release five men arrested near a US-used airbase while investigators examine a suspected bomb plot and possible foreign involvement.

The men were detained early Sunday near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, southwest England. All five are London-based British nationals in their mid-20s.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Monday, Trump said British police should not have freed the suspects on bail.

“I’m surprised that they released them, I wouldn’t have done that,” the US president said. “We know everything about them. We would not have released them.”

Trump’s comments have added political pressure to an already sensitive investigation involving one of Britain’s most strategically important military sites.

Why were five men arrested near RAF Fairford?

British counter-terrorism officers arrested the men near RAF Fairford after investigating what authorities described as a suspected bomb plot.

The base has been used by US bombers conducting strikes against Iran since March, making it a potential target amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Police later confirmed that all five men had been released on bail while inquiries continued. Officers are examining whether a foreign state may have played a role in the alleged plot.

Authorities have not publicly identified the suspects or disclosed the evidence that led to their arrests.

The investigation remains active, and no charges have been announced. Bail does not establish guilt, and the men have not been convicted of any offence.

Does the case involve Iran?

Asked whether Iran could be connected to the incident, Trump replied: “It might be.”

He declined to provide further details, saying he knew the answer but preferred not to discuss it publicly.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was similarly guarded during an interview with Fox News. He said the incident “clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor” but offered no details about the suspected country or the nature of the alleged connection.

“There’s a lot more news that’ll come out on this in the days to come,” Rubio said, describing the matter as “very serious.”

Iran has denied involvement in any plot targeting the airbase.

Britain and US remain in close contact

Despite his criticism of the bail decision, Trump said British authorities had worked “very closely” with the United States.

The comments suggest intelligence-sharing between the two countries is continuing as counter-terrorism officers assess whether the arrests were linked to a wider operation.

RAF Fairford has long been an important base for American military aircraft operating from the United Kingdom. Its use in strikes against Iran has increased its strategic significance—and potentially its security risk.

For now, investigators have released few details. The central questions remain unanswered: what the suspects allegedly planned, whether explosives were involved, and whether any foreign government helped direct or support the operation.
