Electronics Design Engineers - FPGA
Electronics Design Engineers - FPGA
Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Harwell Campus, Oxfordshire or
Daresbury Laboratory, Daresbury, Cheshire
Salary £37,213 – £46,572 (Senior Engineer), or £47,725 - £58,028 (Principal Engineer) dependent upon qualifications and experience and inclusive of annual allowance
2 Years Fixed Term
The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations. We are trusted to support, enable and undertake pioneering projects in an amazing diversity of fields. Through world-class facilities and people, we’re driving ground-breaking advances in science, technology and engineering.
Within STFC the Technology Department provides advanced technology and engineering in support of both STFC funded activities and other high profile international projects. Our technologies and competencies are world class and our expertise encompasses micro-nano engineering, through microelectronics, to major engineering structures.
About The Role
We now have new opportunities for the European Spallation Source (ESS) DAQ R&D In Kind project, where we are working in partnership with ESS to develop the DAQ System which will be used as a common platform for all the ESS Detector Systems.
These roles can be based at either our Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire or the Daresbury Laboratory in Cheshire.
You will be working within a combined ESS and STFC team of around 8 Engineers on an initial 2 year Fixed Term basis, which aligns with the delivery of the DAQ system for ESS.
We are looking for expertise in building Scientific DAQ systems using the latest FPGA devices, 10G to 100G Ethernet Networking and interfacing to custom Sensors ASICs such as those used by the Particle Physics community.
The team you will be joining is part of a larger team within the Department which has around 60 Engineers specialising in applying electronics technology to scientific applications, including components from either our own custom ASIC and CMOS Image Sensor design groups or those developed commercially or from the global scientific community.
Applications are typically based around the latest high end FPGA devices for signal processing and 10G-100G Ethernet for data transport. Systems can range from a single FPGA to extreme DAQ systems with many thousands of FPGAs and 10G links feeding large CPU/GPU processing farms.
We also have an active R&D program where we aim to apply the very latest technology to scientific applications such as Parallel Optical Transceivers, 14nm-20nm FPGAs and 10G/40G/100G/ Ethernet with a view to move to 200G and 400G Ethernet as the technologies mature.
Typically working under the guidance of Principal Engineering staff, the Senior Design Engineer’s responsibilities may range from leading or assisting in the architecting of a system, working in or leading a small project team to implement a system, or undertaking tasks on an individual level such as designing a complex board or IP library block, or undertaking a challenging FPGA implementation.
Taking the lead role in any aspect of management, technical management and design and project life cycle. This would include bidding for work/funding, dealing with the start-up of projects, line management, leading a project design team, advanced FPGA design and leading technical areas such as design tools or design strategy.
These roles may require UK and international travel.
You will hold a Degree in Electronics, Physics, Computer Science or similar, with Masters and PhD qualified candidates desirable at Principal level.
You should be able to demonstrate experience and/or knowledge across high speed Networking, FPGA, DSP, HPC or Image/signal/data processing.
You will have strong FPGA design skills using the latest devices and vendor tool flows, along with proficiency in leading and/or implementing large complex Xilinx and/or Altera designs.
Expertise gained in an academic and/or industrial environment applied to Big Science DAQ/Processing Applications or other large Instrumentation Systems or large deployments would be beneficial.
You should be able to demonstrate Technical, Managerial, Personal Development and Leadership skills appropriate to the responsibility level applied for.
For consideration at Senior or Principal level you will demonstrate knowledge of Electronic/Optical/tool technology roadmaps/trends, along with System Design Skills optimising hardware, firmware and software designs.
Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills are required to work with a range of colleagues and stakeholders
An exceptional index linked pension scheme, 30 days leave allowance and flexible working are offered, as well as an onsite nursery, subsidised restaurant, a gym and sports facilities. A relocation allowance may also be available where applicable.
Applicants are required to include a cover letter outlining their suitability for this role. Please also state where you saw this role advertised.
