Mechanical Engineer - Cambridge

We are looking for a mechanical engineer to design, prototype and test high-performance sensors, mechanical actuators and laboratory equipment. Your work would cover a mixture of technologies both within the oil and gas industry, and in other sectors such as robotic systems and scientific instrumentation. You would be responsible for designing equipment which requires a flair for mechanical design coupled with an analytical approach to tough problems such as reliability in harsh environments, optical system alignment or transducer design. We are looking to grow our team in this area and are interested in candidates with expertise in low volume/high value market sectors as well as graduates with a passion for solving difficult problems and some practical design experience.


To meet the requirements of this role you will have:

An excellent first degree or PhD in mechanical engineering or a related discipline (we will accept applications from current students expecting to graduate this educational year).
Practical experience of designing mechanical components and assemblies, including building robust CAD models, producing high-quality drawings and liaising with sub-contract manufacturers.
Very strong mathematical and analytic skills.
An imaginative and inquisitive mind, eager to learn new skills and to develop solutions for interesting and complex problems.
A hands-on interest in technology and a desire to understand how things work.
Excellent communication skills.

In addition, any experience of the following will also be beneficial:

Finite-element modelling and validation.
Computational fluid dynamics modelling and validation.
Experience of designing and analysing thermodynamic and heat-transfer systems.
Optical component and system design.
Experience of using MathCAD or MATLAB, or of computer programming.
Practical electronics experience.
Graduates with industrial experience or with relevant equivalent practical experience gained through research projects or extracurricular activities are welcomed.
