Photonics Engineer
Scotland - Central Belt
Salary circa 50K

This role is for a Photonics Engineer to be part of the R&D Design team based in Scotland working on products that are primarily targeted towards the consumer electronics market, with applications in mobile phones and portable equipment such as laptops and tablets. With a strong design emphasis on cost and industrialisation for very high volume, the products are developed using state of the art materials, components and precision automated assembly processes.

The Role

The successful candidate will take a key role in assisting the sourcing team in the assessment and selection of optical component manufacturing partners, evaluating their technology and determining their process capability for manufacturing and its suitability for designs.
The role with require the definition of realistic target specifications for optical components for new products by working closely across multi-disciplinary teams from silicon architecture, sensor design, systems engineering and applications.
It will require close cooperation and management of suppliers during design and industrialisation phases on all technical issues.
The candidate will need to be confident in communicating with end customer on technical aspects relating to optical integration.
There will also need to be a willingness to travel several times per year to support customer and supplier visits.

Key Skills and Experience

*Physics background (Masters or PhD in Physics or Physics related discipline) with emphasis on optics, opto-electronics or semiconductors
*Knowledge of semiconductor lasers design and manufacturing, preferably VCSEL
*Experience of semi-conductor processes, ideally II-VI or III-V materials
*Familiar with epitaxial growth for semiconductor lasers
*Direct involvement in high volume manufacturing (or technical coordination of activities), industrialisation, new product introduction
*Management of suppliers - track record of managing development and industrialisation of new components at subcontract manufacturers
*Practical measurement and characterisation of electro-optical or optical systems
