Wire Bonding Technician in the Experimental Physics Department (EP), ALICE Detector and Systems Group (AID), Detector Technology Section (DT)

ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment), one of the four large experiments of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, is a general-purpose heavy-ion detector designed to study the physics of strongly interacting matter using nucleus-nucleus, proton-nucleus and proton-proton collisions.


As a Wire Bonding Technician in the EP-AID-DT Section, you will be in charge of the wire-bonding of a large number of ITS detector modules. This will include programming, set-up, operation and fine-tuning of wire bonding equipment.

You will:
  • Prepare components to be used in the assembly of hybrid microcircuits and sub-assemblies, including cleaning with ultrasonic baths and similar methods, and visual inspection.
  • Assemble or modify tasks on hybrid microcircuits and sub-assemblies, including wire bonding under conditions such as small pad sizes, ultrathin silicon dies, unusual substrate configurations that require special setup and bonding techniques.
  • Screen hybrids microcircuits by visual inspection, wire bond pull tests, or other Quality Assurance methods.
  • Interact with physicists, engineers and other technicians on matters related to design specifications, finished product technical performance and documentation.
  • Operate equipment and instrumentation related to wire bonding assembly and quality assurance such as climatic chambers, vibration test systems, infrared cameras, high-field electromagnets, microscopes.
Qualification required

Technical certificate or general secondary education in the field of electronics, or equivalent.

The experience required for this post is:
  • Proven work experience with aluminium wedge wire bonding, using automatic (programmable) bonding machines, wire bonding techniques, procedures, testing and quality standards.
  • Experience in working under a microscope on precision, delicate, tiny and/or ESD sensitive assemblies and components.
  • Experience with database spreadsheets and word processors.
The technical competencies required for this post are:
  • Knowledge of quality and reliability assurance techniques and tools.
  • Components assembly, including related techniques and tools.
  • Precision assembly and construction.
  • Assembly in clean rooms.
The language competencies required are:
  • Spoken and written English or French.
  • Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports in at least one of the two languages.
