Fundamentally the role consists of the commissioning of electronic controls systems, involving the connecting of inter-unit cabling, system setup and configuration, and testing, including sea-trials. Knowledge of the water jet unit and the hydraulic system is also required so as to be able to check the mechanical aspects of the jet before first running, and for faults on the jet. Along with this is the support role which includes system fault finding on board as well as remote assistance to distributors etc. when problems occur.
The role requires good communication skills as there is a large element of technical support involved, to end users, builders and distributors. The ability to take control of a situation is often required (eg at a shipyard) in order to get things done. There is also the occasional visit to shipyards prior to build to attend technical meetings and advise on installation issues eg module positioning, cabling, power supplies etc.
Service calls also need to be managed, which may require vessel visits or a request to a distributor for assistance. The urgency of any service call needs to be quickly established and appropriate action taken.
Technical support is provided to the sales team with respect to specification of projects and what we can and can't do.
A large amount of travel will be required especially during busy periods, sometimes at short notice. This is primarily around Europe but occasionally further afield (worldwide).
Other office duties include managing warranty claims and use of the Complaints database for tracking and progressing complaints. The Project Log database also needs to be updated as new vessels are commissioned, or any major work is done on in-service vessels.
Assistance is provided to the spares team in as far as identifying parts, helping distributors and customers with electronics parts etc.
Some minor in-house repairs may be required to modules when replacement modules are not available or a complete module replacement isn't necessary
