A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Chief Engineer to join a leading defence consultancy's London site. You will be taking responsibility for the company's Secure Communications team, including all of it top level activity and strategy. The ideal candidate will be a strong leader, have great customer interfacing skills and be able to work at both tactical and strategic levels.

Key Responsibilities:

- A senior leadership position the role is both strategic in terms of setting the direction of the business and tactical in terms of the delivery of world class engineering
- Chief Engineer responsible for supervising and managing of a large multidisciplinary team and the engineering content of all projects in the Secure Communications business area. This will encompass systems engineering, hardware, firmware and software design and involves working closely with the programme function of the business
- Chief Engineer is responsible for setting the strategic technical direction of the business area working closely with the Marketing function of the business to set strategy at the top level and drawn down to tactical plans and PV projects in the form of technology/product roadmaps
- Must be able to work with wide customer base to help inform and shape requirements as well as presenting progress on various projects and articulate complex ideas and solutions
- Provide technical direction in all areas of Secure Communications product development ensuring adherence to relevant processes and quality standards. This includes Tactical Data Links, Secure Radio and networked communications systems. A broad knowledge of communication systems both architecturally and from a technology perspective will be critical to role
- Possessing good commercial awareness the Chief Engineer will be expected to guide the engineering approach in a direction that balances meeting the needs of the customer with the internal needs of the business
- Approval authority for all documents produced by the team
- Technical liaison with other design teams and subject experts in Engineering


- Experience of developing complex systems for a military environment to defined budgets and timescales
- Detailed knowledge of Tactical Data Links - primarily Link 11, Link 16, plus an awareness of Link 22
- Detailed knowledge of secure radio solutions and secure networked communications including waveform solutions, DSP, RF hardware and communications infrastructure
- A complete understanding of the full breath of engineering activity throughout a product life cycle, and a demonstrable understanding of systems engineering as applied to the development and delivery of complex systems including hardware and software e.g. MIL-STD 1521, INCOSE V model
- Experience of designing and qualifying products to meet strict environmental and EMC requirements and a detailed understanding of the requirements and implications of meeting Tempest requirements
- Knowledge of data security and cryptography technologies
- Extensive experience of product design and development including high speed digital, microprocessor, and analogue hardware, and application software development in real-time environments
- Experience of the modelling and simulation tools and techniques in the development of complex communication solutions
